Major Bike Lane Expansion Set for Midtown Atlanta

Atlanta John Andersen January 22, 2025

In an exciting development for cyclists and pedestrians, a major street overhaul is on the horizon for a busy section of Midtown Atlanta. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has unveiled plans to transform a 1.1-mile stretch of 14th Street, adding a two-way cycle track that will link the Interlock area in West Midtown to the heart of the Midtown business district.

This initiative is part of a larger $4 million project aimed at milling, resurfacing, and upgrading safety across nearly six miles of Atlanta’s roads, extending from West Midtown to Buckhead. The planned cycle track will feature concrete wheel stops and other safety measures, providing a safer corridor for both cyclists and pedestrians.

The proposed cycle track is designed to reduce traffic accidents significantly, cutting the rate by nearly 50 percent according to GDOT’s projections. This will be achieved by reallocating one westbound lane for the exclusive use of the cycle track, and adding a dedicated left turn lane to enhance traffic flow and reduce weaving between lanes.

Currently in the conceptual phase, the project welcomes public input until February 14, which can be submitted online or through mailed forms. Following the public feedback period, the project is set to move forward into the right-of-way acquisition and final design stages, with construction timelines yet to be determined.

This development is part of a broader effort to create safer, more beautiful multimodal gateways in the city. It complements other projects, such as the transformation of the 10th Street bridge into a vibrant link between Georgia Tech and central Midtown, expected to be completed by 2026.
